Sophia + Sam provides the eco-minded family with environmentally friendly hand-made baby clothing and accessories with all the beauty and functional features, but include added benefits of being produced from 100% GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic cotton. Organic fabric is the safest and optimal for a baby’s sensitive skin.
We care about the environment, as the production of the organic cotton restricts use of insecticides and pesticides that pollute our planet’s air and water and can be harmful to the farmers and their families. Traditional cotton is accountable for almost 25% of all chemical pesticides used in agriculture, and nearly 50% of the textile market uses cotton. Simply, it ‘s better for you, better for your baby, and better for our environment. Every Sophia + Sam item is custom made as a piece of love from our home to yours.
What is GOTS Certified?
To be considered 100% organic, our cotton has to meet a very strict approval process. The certifier, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), has approved every step in the process from cotton to the finished goods. The process begins from the time the cotton is grown, to how the cotton is transported to the mill, how it is milled, how it is bleached using oxygen based bleach (non chlorine), how the cotton is printed using *Low Impact Dyes, and must also meet a standard of fair working conditions set by the International Labour Organization (ILO). At the end of the process a certificate is provided to ensure that all of these standards have been met and approved.
*Low impact dyes do not contain toxic chemicals or mordants, require less rinsing and have a high absorption rate. High absorption rates and a decreased use of rinse water create less wastewater and runoff.
Our Fabric Sources:
Birch Fabrics, Cloud 9, Nature’s Fabrics, Organic Cotton Plus, Monaluna, and Clothworks
Organic cotton is bleached, using non-chlorinated bleach, which means the base fabric is more of a natural color vs. the bright white you get with conventional cotton.
Certified Low Impact dyes are wash-fast and like all dyed fabrics will fade over time with repeated washing. Please see the FAQS for more information on recommended washing and drying instructions.
Organic fabric will have some natural imperfections due to the process in which it is bleached and printed. We feel that these imperfections only add character to the fabric.
